Experiences that take us by surprise hold some of the most amazing things this life has to offer.
Remember the last time you were tapped on the shoulder when you least expected it?
You’re looking down or chattering away or fiddling with something and suddenly — you stop.
A euphoric “yes!” sweeps inside you and your senses flit and fly everywhere. Who? How? Why now?
Somehow someone’s words or essence or higher being rubs you raw or rubs you right. Makes you scratch your head and say, “hmmmm —” and then ask, “what the devil?”
Not even my type.
Too late.
You’ve been bitten.
Then you’re smitten.
Then things progress until — you must profess.
And if the walls come up — then you pine.
God matches needs with gifts all the time. In ways and for reasons we cannot begin to know.
While pining past the point of no return is a waste of precious time, a certain amount is nothing if not divine. Longing, it is said, leads us to our belonging. And —if we have the grace to endure this state without insisting our narrow expectations for what we think we need must be met — well then, perhaps we will experience the true meaning of the gift we’ve received.
Amen to that.
