This painting was built on a fascination I developed with “what lies beyond the tree line” while skiing last season.
It can look like air, water, earth —
And even fire —
At different times and from different angles.
While painting this I felt called to pick up the red and place a bold heart shape on the mountain rim. From there, points of fire sprung up —
Hearts gathering to kneel at the base the great Heart. It seemed right to make the cloud cover live in between the tree line and the ridge —
And then the sun, like breath, fills and lights both what is seen —
And unseen.
